1. Inspector Workflow

2. Environmental Conditions

  • Measure and record ambient temperature, surface temperature, relative humidity, and dew point.
  • Many coating specs require the surface temperature to be at least 5°F / 3°C above dew point.
  • Watch for changing conditions: sunrise, shade, wind, fog, rain, cold steel, and enclosed spaces.
  • Do not rely on “it feels dry.” Use calibrated instruments and document readings.

3. DFT / WFT Quick Notes

  • WFT = wet film thickness, measured during application.
  • DFT = dry film thickness, measured after curing/drying.
  • Basic estimate: WFT = desired DFT ÷ volume solids.
  • Example: 4 mils DFT at 50% solids needs about 8 mils WFT.
  • Always follow the project specification and the coating manufacturer’s product data sheet.

4. Surface Preparation

Anchor profileProfile must match coating system requirements. Too low = poor mechanical adhesion; too high = peak coverage risk.
